What did he base much of what he did on?
His father region was peaceful and much of what he did was based on internal policy.
What happened because he tried to keep peace/internal policy?
His father’s internal policy meant Egypt lost much of its land in the North.
What was the internal policy?
Internal policy of Amenhotep III is that the extended policy didn’t exist.
What is known about him as a boy?
Little is known about Akhenaten as a boy, gain education in the hall of the temple of Ra in the Heliopolis
What happened to the evidence of him?
All evidence was intentionally destroyed by the pharaoh who succeeded him, includes cartouches, images, statues, etc
When did he change his name?
Amenhotep IV changed his name to Akhenaten in his 6th year of region, in support of his god Aten.
Who is Aten?
A minor god, the Sun Disc god.
How did he honour Aten?
Amenhotep III himself had dedicated many things to Aten including a man-made lake and boat for his wife Tiy called ‘Aten Gleams’
What did he tell us about Aten?
Amenhotep III also was perhaps key to our understanding of Aten: he proclaimed himself a living god and ‘The Dazzling Sun-Disc’.
Changes he made
The major change with Aten came when Akhenaten moved the capital from Thebes to a new city (built intentionally) called Amarna.
What became he principal god of Egypt?
Furthermore, it was at this time that Aten, essentially became the principal god for Egypt.
What happened with the gods?
We may have been looking at Henotheism (one god is more important than others).
Did he change art?
One of the most unusual aspects of Akhenaten’s rule was that he changed art completely. Now artistic representation was intimate and more realistic than previous examples.
