Ajuvants Flashcards
What is an adjuvant?
Any material that enhances the cellular and/or humoral immune response to an antigen.
Why are adjuvants used in vaccines?
Used to facilitate the administration of reduced quantities of antigen while achieving an adequate immune response,
resulting in economic savings.
What is the role of adjuvants in vaccine production?
Important in the production of subunit and vector vaccines
they help stimulate a stronger immunological response compared to vaccines administered without adjuvants.
What are the characteristics of an ideal adjuvant?
- Safety (no unacceptable local/systemic responses)
- Elicit protective immunity even against weak immunogens
- Non-pyrogenic
- Chemically defined (QC testing)
- Effective in infants/young children
- Yield stable formulation with the antigen
- Biodegradable
- Non-immunogenic itself
What type of adjuvants are routinely used in human medicine?
only aluminium-based in human medicine.
How adjuvanticity often associated with toxicity?
The greater the adjuvanticity of a product, the more toxic it is likely to be.
