Airway, Ventilation and Respiration Flashcards
What is an airway?
A passageway in which air enters and exits the body
What makes up the airway?
Not Many People Like Tomatoes Before Lunch.
N-nose
M-mouth
P-pharynx
L- larynx
T- trachea
B- bronchi/bronchioles
L- lungs
What is the use of suctioning?
to get unwanted stuff out of the airway quickly and continuously
What is the Sniffing position?
the head projected forward and face is parallel to the ceiling
What do you do when you hear gurgling?
suction the airway
what is a patent airway?
an airway that is open and clear but is most likely going to stay open
What is stridor?
a high pitched sound that is due yo an airway obstruction
what are the most common ways to open an airway
- jaw trust
- head tilt chin lift
what is a gag reflux?
an automatic response ones body has that causes them to want to vomit
why does the gag reflux matter?
it tells us what airway adjunct we can use
what is bronchoconstriction?
the constriction smooth muscle with in the bronchioles
- results in increased resistance to airflow
what is ventilation?
the process of “breathing” air moving in and out of the body
what is respiration?
the process of gas exchange within the alveoli.
what is alveolar ventilation?
the amount of air that reached the alveoli
what is cyanosis?
a blue or gray color resulting from lack of O2 within the body
