Airway Route System Flashcards
What are the lateral limits of low altitude federal airways?
4 NM
each side of centerline.
What are the designated altitudes for the airways in the VOR and L/MF airway system?
From 1,200 ft above the surface up to but not included 18,000 ft MSL.
These airways are depicted on in route low altitude charts.
How are Federal airways depicted on enroute low altitude charts?
Black V
followed by airway number
What is a changeover point?
Point along the route
Airway segment between two adjacent navigational facilities
Airways where changeover navigational guidance should occur.
What is mileage breakdown point?
Occasionally an X will appear.
Mileage breakdown
or computer navigation fixed
and indicates a course change
What is a waypoint?
Predicted geographical position used for route/instrument approach definition, progress report, published VFR routes, visual reporting points, points for transitioning and/or circumnavigating controlled or special use airspace.
What are two types of waypoints found on charts?
Fly-by waypoint: typically use when a change in course of procedure occurs.
Fly over waypoints: depicted for pointed star enclosed in a circle. Used to denote a missed approach point, a missed approach holding point, specific points in space that must be flown over
Are the courses depicted on enroute low altitude chart magnetic or true course?
Magnetic courses
Describe the climb procedure when approaching a fix beyond which a higher MEA exist.
Begin your climb to the new MEA at the fix
Describe the climb procedure when approaching a fixe at which a MCA exist.
Initiate a climb so MCA is reach by the time the intersection is crossed.
Usually indicated when approaching Steeply horizon, rising terrain and obstacle clearance
So signal reception is compromised
What are T-routes?
Depicted on enroute LOW Altitude Charts.
RNAV use.
1200 feet above the surface up to but not including 18,000 ft MSL
What are Q-routes?
Depicted on enroute HIGH Altitude Charts.
RNAV use.
18,000 feet MSL and FL 450 inclusive
