Airway Nerve Innervation Flashcards
what nerve is the nasal cavity innervated by?
trigeminal (5)
anterior parts of nasal cavity and septum innervation
opthalmic –> anterior ethmoidal nerve
remaining portion of nasal cavity/septum
maxillary nerve
three prominent branches of maxillary nerve
lateral posterior superior
inferior posterior
nasopalatine
VIA SPHENOPALATINE GANGLION
what does the sphenopalatine ganglion carry
- sensory fibers of maxillary nerve
- symp. fibers from carotid plexus
- petrosal nerve (including glossopharyngeal nerve)
- pharyngeal & palatine branches
Pharynx innervation
glossopharyngeal
Glossopharyngeal innervation
posterior 1/3 tongue fauces & tonsillae epiglottis pharynx sensory posterior 1/2 & soft palate taste mucous glands carotid sinus
Sympathetic fibers derivation
carotid plexus & cervical sympathetic trunk
Efferent motor fibers of pharynx -
innervate stylopharyngeus and join pharyngeal plexus
where does the glossopharyngeal nerve emerge
jugular foramen and curves forward between jugular vein and ICA
Motor innervation pharynx
vagus nerve
Larynx innervation
SLN slants forward to cornu major of the hyoid bone
SLN internal
enters through foramen in thyrohyoid membrane
-visceral sensory and secretomotor innervation to larynx above cords
SLN external
descends along outside of thyrohyoid membrane beneath sternothyroid muscle to cricothyroid muscle (motors)
Vagus nerve track extrathoracic
descends in carotid sheath to thoracic inlet
first: lies behind IJV and ICA
later: between IJV and ICA
