Airway Manoeuvres & Positining Flashcards
Manoeuvres & positioning - indication
Pt requiring airway management
Manoeuvres & positioning - neutral position
Initial assessment of the airway, and used for for patients at risk for cervical injury
External auditory meatus in line with mid clavicle (2-5cm)
Manoeuvres & positioning - Sniffing position
Patients requiring airway management and further inspection
External auditory meatus to sternum
Manoeuvres & positioning - lateral position
Best for patients in altered conscious state, not requiring active airway management - reduces risk of aspiration
Ensure head is extended to avoid anatomical occlusion
Manoeuvres & positioning - Head tilt/chin lift
Initial assessment and management
Lift chin anteriorly and tilt head backwards, aim is lift tongue off back of throat
Manoeuvres & positioning - triple airway manoeuvre
Head tilt, jaw thrust, mouth open
Avoid submandibular pressure as this could cause airway obstruction
Avoid head tilt in potential spinal injury
