Airway management Flashcards
1
Q
Retrograde intubation indication
A
- Unstable Cervical spine
- Upper airway bleeding
- Best used when intubation has failed but ventilation is still posibble
- Can also be performed in an awake patient
2
Q
Contraindications of Retrograde intubation
A
- Neck flexion deformity ( unable to acsses the cricothyroid membrane
- Unhable to identify neck landmarcks9 severe obesity)
- Pretracheal mass ( thyroid goiter)
- Tracheal stenosis under the puncture site
- Tumor that obstruct the path of the wire
- Coagulopathy
- Infection (pretracheal abcess)
3
Q
Complications of Retrograde Intubation
A
- Bleeding
- Pneumomediastinum
- Pneomothorax
- Trigeminal nerve trauma
- Breath Holding
- Wire travels in the wong direction
4
Q
Contraindications of Transtracheal Jet ventilation
A
- Upper airway obstruction
- Laryngeal Injury
5
Q
Complications of Transtracheal Jet Ventilation
A
- Upper airway obstruction- ais is able to enter the lungs, but is inable to exit the lungs causing:
- Barotrauma
- Pneumothorax
- subcutaneous emphysema
- mediastinal emphysema
- Hemorrhage
- aspiration
- tracheal injury
- esophageal injury
6
Q
Contraindication of Cricothyroidotomy
A
- Children less than 6 years
7
Q
Complications of Cricothyroidotomy
A
- Traqueal Stenosis
- Tracheal or esophageal injury
- hemorrhage
- Disordered swallowing
- subcutanous or mediastinal emphysema
8
Q
Contraindication of Tracheostomy
A
- There are no absolute contraindication
9
Q
Complication of Tracheostomy
A
- Acute:
- airway obstruction
- hypoventilation
- pneumothorax
- bleeding
- Long term:
- tracheal stenosis
- tracheomalacia
- tracheoesophageal fistula
- tracheal necrosis
