Airway Management Flashcards
How much air should be squeezed in for each ventilation via a bag-valve resuscitator device?
300-500mL for each vent.
When should you NOT paralyse a patient?
If they have an obsturcting lesion in the oropharynx/larynx.
When may etCO2 readings be low despite correct tube placement?
Cardiac arrest
What length of tube (at teeth) is typically required for men and women, respectively?
23cm in men
21cm in women
Four main steps before intubating in an RSI:
- Prep position: pillow, neck in extension
- Pre oxygenate
- Induction agent and paralysing agent given as boluses (without waiting for loss of consciousness)
- Cricoid pressure
How long should you pre-oxygenate before conducting an RSI?
2 to 5 minutes
Which part of a supraglottic airway device should you lubricate?
The posterior aspect
What is the BURP method?
External backward, upward, rightward pressure on the THYROID cartilage to help bring the vocal cords in to field of vision.
This is not a substitute for cricoid pressure, which should not be released.
What should be done after a failed intubation attempt?
Call for help.
Attempt bag-mask ventilation.
If bag-mask ventilation is possible, attempt intubation one more time.
