6
Q

What type of care should be given to landing gear shock struts?

A

They should be inspected regularly for leakage of fluid and for proper extension. The exposed piston should be wiped clean daily and inspected for scoring or corrosion.

Q

What is the effect of under inflated tires?

A

Rapid, uneven wear at or near the edges of the tread, and creep or slip when brakes are applied.

Q

What is the purpose of a shuttle valve in a power control system?

A

Each brake actuating line in a power brake system incorporates a shuttle valve for the purpose of
isolating the emergency brake system from the normal brake system. When emergency brake
actuating pressure enters the shuttle valve, the shuttle is systematically moved to the opposite end
of the valve. This closes off the normal hydraulic brake system actuating line and allows the
emergency fluid to actuate the brakes.

14
Q

What is the purpose of the fusible plug in some aircraft wheels?

A

It is designed to melt at a specific elevated temperature and relive air pressure to prevent the tire
blowing out

15
Q

How should aircraft tires be stored?

A

They should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from chemicals, oil, or sunlight.

16
Q

What is the most necessary maintenance function for safe, long, aircraft tire service?

A

Ensuring they are properly inflated.

17
Q

What safety procedure should be followed when inflating tires in general?

A

They should be inflated inside of a cage whenever possible.

18
Q

What is the purpose of the anti-skid system?

A

To bring a fast moving aircraft to a stop during ground roll without tire skidding.

19
Q

What task should be accomplished if the aircraft brakes are spongy?

A

Bleed the brakes

20
Q

What are two methods of bleeding brakes?

A

gravity and pressure method.

21
Q

When inspecting brakes, what do you look for?

A
  1. Check for leaks while the system is pressurized.
  2. Check flex hoses for swelling, cracking, or soft spots.
  3. Check brake pedals for spongy actuation. (This is an indication of air in the system.)
  4. Check brake pedals for excessive travel. (This indicates worn linings.)
22
Q

What do you do before disassembling an oleo strut?

A

Discharge the pressure.

23
Q

What is the purpose of main landing gear torque links?

A

They keep the landing gear pointed in a straight ahead direction.

24
Q

What type of nosewheel steering is provided on small aircraft?

A

A simple system consisting of mechanical linkage hooked to the rudder pedals

25
Q

What unit prevents nosewheel vibration?

A

A shimmy damper.

26
Q

What prevents a split wheel from leaking air through the inner and outer mating surfaces, or the wheel assembly?

A

An O-Ring between the two assemblies.

27
Q

what is the purpose of a wheel fusible plug?

A

To relieve air pressure to prevent tire blowout.

28
Q

What is the purpose of power brake debooster cylinders?

A

They reduce the pressure to the brakes and increase the volume of fluid flow.

29
Q

What methods are used for transmitting cockpit control movements to a steering control unit in large aircraft?

A

Mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic.

30
Q

What must be accomplished before inspecting a wheel brake system for hydraulic leaks?

A

Pressurize the system.

31
Q

What is the indication of excessive heating of a wheel bearing?

A

Discoloration, bluish tint to the metal surface.
