Aircraft fuel systems Flashcards
What is the purpose of a fuel jettisoning (dump) system?
It is an emergency system provided so that the flight crew can quickly bring the weight of the airplane down to the maximum landing weight.
When would a fuel jettison system be required for small aircraft?
It is required when the maximum takeoff weight is more than the maximum landing weight.
What are a few types of fuel tanks (cells)?
Bladder-type fuel tank, integral fuel tanks, and welded or riveted fuel tanks.
what supports the weight of fuel in bladder-type fuel cell?
The structure of the cavity that the cell fit into.
What is “wet-wing” type construction?
integral fuel cells.
What markings must be placed near the fuel filler opening on reciprocating engine aircraft?
The word “Avgas” and the minimum fuel grade.
What are the advantages of a single point pressure fueling system?
Pressure fueling, sometimes referred to as single-point or underwing fueling, greatly reduces the time required to service large aircraft. It also eliminates aircraft skin damage from hoses and hose nozzles, and reduces the chance of fuel contamination.
why should you wait a period of time after fueling before checking fuel sumps?
To allow time for water and contamination to settle to the drain point.
Why should the fuel sumps of aircraft be drained before the first flight of the day?
To remove any water that has condensed in the fuel and collected in the sump.
What does water look like when in fuel that has been drained from the sumps?
It looks like clear balls of jelly.
What is the purpose of a fuel temperature indicator on a turbine engine?
It is a means for checking the temperature of the fuel in the tanks at the engine to determine when there may be a danger of ice crystals forming in the fuel. (to monitor the temp of fuel to determine when there might be donner).
What is the purpose of warning lights in connection with fuel system?
Warning lights may be used to indicate when the fuel pressure is too low, or to indicate when the fuel quantity in a tank is below a certain amount.
Where are electrical operated valve-in-transit indicator lights used?
On large multiengine aircraft, each of the fuel crossfeed and line valves may be provided with valve in-transit indicator lights. The light is on only during the time the valve is in motion and is off when movement is complete.
Why do fuel selectors have detents?
So the pilot can feel when the switch is in a specific position.
What are four general types of fuel quantity gauges?
sight glass, mechanical, electrical, and electronic.
