Aircraft Finishes Flashcards
What are the two common types of paint used on aircraft?
Zinc-chromate, wash Primers, enamels, laquers and polyurethane.
What is used to thin zinc chromate primer?
Toluene
What is a cause of spray dust?
Incorrect spray gun setting, air pressure, paint flow, spray pattern,
spray gun held too far, improper thinner mixture.
What are two types of dope used for aircraft finishes?
Nitrate and Butyrate.
What are three methods of applying paint?
Dipping, Brushing and Spraying.
What is the purpose of zinc chromate primer?
It is a corrosion resistant covering and is a base coat for protective topcoats.
Describe the appearance of blushing in a paint finish?
Blushing has a dull milky haze appearance
What will cause blushing in a paint finish?
Moisture in the paint/spay gun or Temperature too high.
What may cause spray paint sags and runs?
Too much paint, reducer and incorrect spray gun setting.
What causes Orange peel?
Spray pressure too high, thinner that dries too fast, cold temperatures.
What paint system is compatible with epoxy topcoats?
Any paint in good condition.
What areas must be protected from damage when using paint remover/stripper?
Windshields, Windows, plastic, composites and fabrics.
How can a mechanic determine if the control surfaces need to be checked for balance after painting?
Refer to the manufacturer service manual.
What could be the result of applying a coat of dope when the temperature of the dope room is too high?
Pinholes or blisters in the dope film.
Many solvents and thinners used in modern finishing systems are toxic, what heath safety precautions
should the mechanic observe?
Respirators or masks must be worn.
