Air Quality Vocab Flashcards
Acid rain is any form of precipitation that is unusually acidic. it can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals and infrastructure and is caused by emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide
Acid deposition
A dangerous situation that generally comes on quickly
Acute
The Aqi is an index for reporting daily air quality. It tells you how clean or polluted your air is and described by frenzy, yellow, orange, and red
Air quality index
An organic compound that contains only carbon, chlorine, and flourine capable of breaking down ozone
CFC’S chlorofluorocarbons
The pattern of variation in temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, precipitation, atmospheric particle count and other meteorological variables in a given region over long periods
Climate
An interval of time (thousands of years) wishing an ice age that is marked by colder temperatures and glacier advances
Glacial period
A significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods ranging from decades to millions of years. Currently a controversial topic as it is likely to be human caused and accelerating
Global climate change
A process by which thermal radiation from a planetary surface is absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse gases, and is re radiated in all directions but specifically back at the Earth
Greenhouse effect
A term which refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants
Indoor air quality
A geological interval of warmer global average temperature lasting thousands of years that seperates consecutive glacial periods within an ice age
Interglacial period
A form of air pollution produced by the photochemical reaction of sunlight with hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides that have been released into the atmospheric, especially by the burning of carbon
Industrial smog
A generic term for mono nitrogen oxides NO and NO2 they are produced from the reaction of nitrogen and oxygen gases in the air during combustion, especially at high temps
NOx
An inorganic compound with the chemical formula O3. Ozone is needed to block UV Rays in the stratosphere but is a toxin at the surface of the earth
Ozone
Air pollution produced by the action of sunlight on hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and other pollutants especially from automobiles
Photochemical smog
Emissions from an identifiable source, such as from power plants or vehicles. Primary pollutants include sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, lead, and volatile organic compounds
Primary pollutants
