Air Pollution Flashcards
Two Categories of Air Pollution
- Primary Air Pollutant
2. Secondary Air Pollutant
Primary Air Pollutant
harmful substance emitted directly into the atmosphere
Secondary Air Pollutant
harmful substance formed in the atmosphere when a primary air polutant reacts with substances normally found in the atmosphere or with other air pollutants
Main Classes of Air Pollutants
- Particulate Material
- Nitrogen Oxides
- Sulphur Oxides
- Carbon Oxides
- Hydrocarbons
- Ozone
Particulate Material`
thousands of different solid or liquid particles suspended in air
- may contain materials with toxic or carcinogenic effects
- extremely small particles can become lodged in lungs
Nitrogen Oxides
cause difficulty breathing and greenhouse gases
Sulphur Oxides
cause acid rain
Carbon Oxides
gases carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide
- greenhouse gases
Hydrocarbons
some related to photochemical smog and greenhouse gases
leap frog effect
long distance transportation of air pollutants
- more evaporation at low latitudes (equator) (low volatility)
- more deposition at high latitudes (north/south poles) (high volatitlity)
