Air pollution Flashcards
Greenhouse effect
The process through which heat is trapped near Earth’s surface by substances known as ‘greenhouse gases.’
Anthropogenic pollution
The pollution originates from human actions
Maximum permitted concentration
the maximum concentration of a gas, vapor, or aerosol in the working atmosphere that, according to contemporary scientific knowledge, does not adversely affect the health of exposed humans
Greenhouse effect gasses
carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and water vapor
The greenhouse effect causes
Burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests, and farming livestock
The greenhouse effect consequences
The flooding of coastal cities, the desertification of fertile areas, the melting of glacial masses, and the proliferation of devastating hurricanes
Ozone layer
The ozone layer in the stratosphere absorbs a portion of the radiation from the sun, preventing it from reaching the planet’s surface. Most importantly, it absorbs the portion of UV light called UVB
Ozone layer dissapearing consequences
increased skin cancers and cataracts and potential damage to some marine organisms, plants, and plastics.
Acid rain
any form of precipitation with acidic components, such as sulfuric or nitric acid that falls to the ground from the atmosphere in wet or dry forms
Ph of acid rain
4,2-4,4
Ph of normal rain
5,6
Acid rain formula
SO 2 + 0.5 O 2 + H 2O → H 2
Acid rain cause
Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air by burning fossil fuels, manufacturing, oil refineries, electricity generation, and vehicles
