Air Masses and Fronts Flashcards
Large bodies of air have the following uniform
temperature
humidity
air pressure
wind
Maritime tropical air mass
develop over warm, ocean areas
Continental tropical air mass
form over dry regions in middle or lower lattitudes
Maritime polar air mass
form over water in polar areas
Continental polar air mass
form over land near poles of northern hemisphere
How air masses move
prevailing westerlies
jet streams
Fronts
when air masses collide and create a weather boundary
Fronts exhibits
storms and unsettled weather
temperature and air pressure differences on either side
Cold front
when a cold air mass advances against a warmer air mass
Warm front
when a warm air mass moves over a cold air mass
Jet streams
long, narrow bands of strong wind in upper atmodphere
Stationary front
between a cold air mass and warm air mass where neither air moves much
Occluded clouds
a warm air mass is caught between 2 cold air masses
Cyclones
swirling center of low pressure air
Anticyclones
a high pressure center of dry air; opposite of cyclone
