Air Frame Flashcards
Recite the airframe sections and the material and composition of those sections
Name the 6 component names making up the B407 Airframe
- Forward Section
- Intermediate Section
- Tailboom Section
- Landing Gear
- Cowlings
6.Particle Separator
What material is the Airframe forward Section constructed from
The Forward section is constructed of Aluminium honeycomb and carbon graphite structures
What material is used for the 2 cabin roof and door windows
Materials used are made of Acrylic plastic.
What material is used for the front and chin bubble windows
Acrylic plastic
What doe the term Monocoque structure Mean
A Monocoque structure is a system where the structural loads are supported through the skin
What does the term semi-monocoque mean
A semi-monocoque structure uses the skin as a monocoque structure as well as using a support structure such as Longerons and Stringers
What are the major load carrying elements of the forward cabin
Aluminum honeycomb and carbon graphite structures
What part of the B407 is the forward section
The cabin section
What part of the B407 is the Intermediate Section
The area between the forward and tail sections. Commences aft of the cabin and ends at the beginning of the tail section. This section provides a deck for the engine installation, Baggage compartment, equipment compartment under the engine deck for electrical equipment along with the tail rotor servo.
What materials are used and what type of construction is the intermediate section
The intermediate section is a semi- monocoque construction using bulk heads longerons and carbon fibre side skins which do not need stiffeners or stringers. The lower section consisting of honeycomb composite material and the engine deck consisting of a titanium firewalls and engine pan.
What type of construction is the Tail section
The tail section is a monocoque construction which transmits all the stresses through its external skin. to increase the strength of the structure certain skins incorporate bonded doublers.
What material is the horizontal stabiliser made of?
Aluminum honeycomb
Why is the horizontal stabiliser fitted inverted?
Provides a downward resultant lift on the tailboom to maintain the cabin in a nearly level attitude throughout all cruise airspeeds
What is the purpose of the horizontal stabiliser leading edge slat.
Improves pitch stability during climbs
What is the name of the flap fitted to the trailing edge of the horizontal stabiliser?
Gurney Flap
What is the purpose of the Gurney Flap?
Reduces mast stresses at high speeds
What is the purpose of the horizontal stabiliser fins.
The leading edge of the horizontal stabiliser fin is offset by 5 deg to improve roll stability of aircraft in forward flight.
What material is the tail Vertical Fin made of
Primarily of aluminum and honeycomb construction
Is the leading edge of the tail fin straight or Offset.
Offset by 9deg
What is the purpose for offsetting the tail fin leading edge
To reduce amount of T/R thrust during forward flight at cruise speed
What sytems are operated by the weight on gear switch?
Cyclic centering, Hour Meter and Flight Time systems are operated by weight on gear switch.
Where is the weight on gear switch located?
Weight on gear switch is mounted to the lower fuselage and is activated by the flexing crosstube through a bracket mounted on the forward landing gear cross tube
Where is the pivot beam located and what is its purpose.
The Pivot beam is attached to the rear landing gear cross tube and limits lateral movement of the airframe when the aircraft is on the ground which minimises the effect of ground resonance
During preflight, what should you look for in regard to fuselage movement with respect to pivot beam
Fuselage should be able to rock freely on the pivot beam.
Should components be fitted to the landing gear assembly
No, could lead to failure of the cross tubes
