Air Brake Inspection Flashcards
What makes up the complete air brake inspectionQ
- Check ABS light
- Check rate of air pressure buildup
- Governor cut out test
- Governor cut in test
- Applied airbrake test
- Low pressure air brake test
- Spring break pop out test
- Test trailer brake
- Test parking brake
- Test service brake
Before turning on the truck you have to do a safety start. What follows?
Step 1: Check the seatbelt (Is not worn, ripped or have any cuts) and must click properly)
Step 2: Make sure both air brakes are on (Check if they are applied by pulling on them)
Step 3: Make sure transmission is in neutral (Check by moving the stick shift from right to left)
Step 4: Make sure air pressure is below 85 psi (If not press service break until below 85 psi)
How do you check the ABS light?
Turn key to on position, (do NOT turn on truck) ABS light is working properly, it has to turn on and off ( Make sure you point to the ABS light)
Check Rate of Air Pressure Buildup
- We are going to check the air pressure rises from 85 to 100 psi in less than 45 seconds
- Mention the PSI level and when the time starts and how long it took for the pressure to rise to 100 psi
Governor cut out test
Speak 1: “Now I am going to perform the cut out test and it must not be more than 140 psi”
Speak 2: Tell the examiner at what psi the cut out test was done and point when the needles are stabilized.
“This was a good test because it was not more than 140 psi”
Governer cut in test loo
SPEAK 1:Tell the examiner that “the cut in should NOT BE LESS than 100 psi”
- Apply service brake every 10 seconds to lower pressure.
- Cut in occurs when needles start rising, it cannot be less than 100psi.
Speak 4: When the needle rises let the examiner know at what psi and point towards the needle. Exp: 102psi
SPEAK 5:
“The needle rose at _____psi this was a good test because it was not less than 100psi”
- Fill air tanks
Applied Air Brake Test
SPEAK: “This is to check for air leaks in the system. It cannot lose more than four psi in 1 minute.”
- Push the clutch in
- Put the transmission in a low gear(1,2,3,4)
- Turn truck off and take off clutch and turn key on position
- Release parking and trailer break one by one
- Wait for needles to stabilize
- Apply service brake pedal (1 minute) and wait for the needles to stabilize again.
SPEAK: “The needles have stabilized______psi, I cannot lose more than 4psi in one minute”
SPEAK: “My minute is up, my psi is at_______. “
If you lost any PSI you have to let the examiner know.
SPEAK: “ I lost____Psi, it is a good test because I did not lose any more than 4 psi in one minute.
SPEAK: “This was a good test because I did not lose more than four psi in one minute”
Low Pressure Air Test
- Place ignition key on but do NOT turn on the truck
SPEAK: “The line or alarm will activate between 55 to 75 PSI”
- Release pressure by applying the service brake rapidly
SPEAK: “The alarm has activated at ________ (Between 55 and 75 psi)
Spring Brake Pop Out Test
SPEAK: “The pop out test will be done between 20 and 45 psi”
- Reduce pressure by pressing the break pedal into the parking and trailer break activate
SPEAK: “The brakes were activated at________ (Between 20 and 45 psi)
When does the light or alarm activate during a low pressure air test?
Between 55 and 75 PSI
How much psi can you lose in one minute during the Applied airbrake test
4 psi
While checking the rate of air pressure built up. What is the range of psi and how long should it take to build up
The range is 85 to 100 psi and it should take Less than 45 seconds
At what point should the air pressure governor cut out
No more than 140 psi
At what psi do the spring breaks pop out
Between 20 and 45 psi
Test trailer brake
SPEAK: “Now I am going to test the trailer brake”
- Press the clutch in
- Transmission on a low gear
- Release the parking break
- Release clutch halfway.
SPEAK: “The truck and trailer did not move, that means the trailer brake is working properly”
