Air Balancing Flashcards
Are the terms air balance and Tab interchangeable?
They are similar but not interchangeable
What is the purpose of TAB?
Certifies to al stakeholders that a buildings air distribution complies with HVAC engineers specifications
What is the acronym LEED?
Leadership in energy and environmental design
Who commissions a building?
A third party commissioning agent
What are the 4 levels of LEED certification?
Certified, silver, gold, platinum
Who is responsible for LEED certification?
In Canada, Canadian Green Building Council
What is the focus of an air balance?
Make sure each zone receives the amount of primary air flow and ventilation required
5 Common air flow testing instruments?
- Anemometer
- Balometer
- Velometer
- Manometer
- Magnehelic
What does anemometer measure?
Air flow velocity
Where is a pitot tube positioned to avoid turbulence and get an accurate measurement
6-10 duct diameters from a transition, elbow, or branch connection
How is expanded scale created on the inclined manometer?
Angular displacement
What is the purpose of a volume damper?
A device that allows the throttling of air volume passing through an air duct
What is the purpose of the wing nut on the balancing damper handle?
Once adjusted, the wing nut is used to secure the handle
What is a duct transit?
An opening cut into the duct which allows for insertion of an air measuring instrument such as a pitot tube
For TAB purposes, how many holes are cut in a round duct?
Three transit holes at 60 degrees
What is traversing?
Taking average air flow measurements across the face of a duct using transit holes
What portions of the face area of every duct do we NOT measure?
NOT center or edges
End of a duct?
Cushion head
