Air and Water 🌊💨 Flashcards
What are uses oxygen
Oxygen is used in steel making , welding and breathing
Uses of nitrogen
Food packaging , production of ammonia and silicon chips
What are these gases separated from air by
Fractional distillation
Fractional distillation of air instructions
- Air is filtered to remove dust and then it is cooled
- Water is now in the liquid state
- Water vapor + carbon dioxide freeze and are removed using absorbent filters
- Noble gases still at gaseous state
- The liquid mixture is passed into the bottom of a fractionating column
- Oxygen liquifies at 183 and Nitrogen - 196
- Nitrogen vaporizes first and is collected as it rises in the gaseous state
- Liquid O2 is removed from bottom of column
What substances pollute the air
Carbon monoxide , sulphuric dioxide ,oxides of nitrogen ,compounds of lead
What are sources of carbon monoxide and the effects
Sources : incomplete combustion of fuels
Effect : poisonous
What are sources of sulfur dioxide and effects
Sources : combustion of fuels , natural gas and sulfide ores
Effects : acid rain which causes corruption to melt structures buildings etc
Also pollutes crops and water
Sources and effects of oxides of nitrogen
Sources : car engines
Effects : acid rain , breathing difficulties
Compounds of lead sources and effects
Sources: old water pipes , petrol
Effects : damage to nervous system
What is a chemical test For water
Cobalt (ii) chloride turns blue to pink on the addition of water . It done using cobalt chloride paper.
Anhydrous copper (iii) sulfate turns white to blue on the addition of water
What is filtration
- filtration process used to remove large insoluble particles by passing the water through filters that trap larger particles
What are measures taken to treat water
Filtration. And chlorination
What is chlorination
Involves the careful addition of chlorine to the water which kills bacteria and other unwanted micro organisms
Photosynthesis equation
Carbon dioxide + water + energy from light produces glucose and oxygen.
6CO2 + 6H20 + (energy) → C6H12O6 + 6O2
Respiration equation
Respiration : glucose + oxygen -> carbon + water + energy
