Air and Air Sealing Flashcards
Infiltration
the unintentional leakage of outside air into a house, measured as cubic feet per minute, or CFM
Air Exchange Rate
number of times the interior volume of air changes over in one hour (air changes per hour) or ACH
Must know the infiltration first
ACH = CFM x 60 / volume
Exfiltration
Air unintentionally flows out of the house, when the pressure inside is higher than the pressure outside (positive pressure)
Velocity
How fast the air is moving inside to outside or visa versa. Measured in CFM
Air Pressure
Measured in Pascals
DeltaP
Air moves from higher pressure to lower pressure
Airflow
Air movement
Pressure Boundary
Where we need to stop the airflow in a home. Same place as the thermal boundaryp
Stack Effect
Air movement also known as the chimney effect - driven by buoyancy force. the greater the density difference, and the higher the structure, the greater the buoyancy force.
Wind effect
is the preassure related effect of wind on a hohse. Air leaks in the envelope allow air to infiltrate, and that in turn pushes air already inside, out.
Mechanical Effect
air movement resulting from mechanical systems such as HVAC, Ventilation, or dyer exhaust
Air Barrier
a material used for controlling air flow
ACH
Air changes per hour
Air Sealing
the practice of installing appropriate materials to stop airflow in certain areas of the home.
