What is a strange situation?

A
  • A controlled observation designed to test attachment security in which infants are assessed on their response to playing in an unfamiliar room, being left alone, left with a stranger and being reunited with a caregiver.

  • 100 middle-class American infants and mothers were used in the study.
  • Used 5 categories - Stranger anxiety, Separation anxiety, Exploration behavior, Secure-based behavior, Reunion behavior
  • Child and caregiver enter unfamiliar playroom, child is encouraged to explore, a stranger comes in and tries to interact with child, caregiver leaves the child and stranger together, caregiver returns and the stranger leaves the child alone, the stranger returns, caregiver returns and is reunited with child.
