aims and hypotheses Flashcards
what is a research aim
stated intentions of what questions are planned to be answered
what is a hypothesis
a formal ambiguous statement of what is predicted. it must contain both conditions of the IV and the expected outcome of the DV be operationalised and measurable
what is a directional hypothesis
states whether the DV outcome is expected to be greater or lesser
what is a non directional hypothesis
doesnt state the direction of the DV, just that there will be a difference
what is a null hypothesis
a prediction of no difference between the two IV conditions on the outcome of DV
what is internal reliablility
each pp in a study is treated the same way
what is external validity
same results found after repeated test
what can we do to test reliability
test- retest reliability
inter observer reliability
measured using correlation
how can we improve reliability
repetition of study
what is reliability
how trustworthy the results are
what is validity
accuracy of results
what is internal validity
measures what its meant to measure
what is external validity
generalised beyond experimental setting
ecological validity (realistic setting)
population validity (applicable sample)
temporal validity
how can we test validity
face validity- does it look like it measures what it should
concurrent validity- are finding similar to a well established test
how can we improve validity
larger sample size
more realistic setting
