AIDS Flashcards
AIDS : Full Form Type : explain. Syndrome meaning AIDS was first reported in : Spread and killed how many people around the world ? What is it caused by ? HIV belongs to which group of viruses ? What is the genetic material in the HIV?
Acquired immunodeficiency deficiency syndrome.
Acquired , not congenital , immune system disease.
Syndrome means a group of symptoms.
First reported in 1981.
25 million people ever since.
AIDS is caused by the Human Immuno deficiency virus or HIV.
HIV belongs to retroviruses.
It has an RNA genome surrounded by a protein coat.
Name 4 ways of HIV transmission from person to person.
- Unprotected sexual intercourse with infected person.
- By transfusion of contaminated blood or blood products.
- By sharing infected needles as in case of intravenous drug abusers.
- From infected mother to child through the placenta.
Does HIV spread by mere touch or physical contact ?
No it spreads only through body fluids.
It is hence imperative for the physical and psychological well being that HIV or AIDS patients are not kept away from their home.
Are AIDS symptoms seen in very early stages of infection ?
How many years can be the time lag ?
No there is always a time lag between the infection and appearence of AIDS symptoms.
This period may vary from a few months to many years
5 to 10 years.
Where does the virus first enter in the body ?
What does it do after entering the cell ?
What happen after reverse transcription ?
What does the ds DNA in normal genome do ?
What acts as the viral factory ?
It first enters the macrophage.
It forms ds viral DNA by reverse transcription of its RNA genome .
The dsDNA attaches to normal cell genome.
It makes normal cell produce viral genome.
The macrophage acts as the viral factory.
What is the diagnoistic test for AIDS ?
ELISA test - Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay.
Are anti retro viral drugs effective ?
No they can only prolong the life of a patient but they cannot cure or prevent their death eventually.
Along with macrophages what else does the virus infect ?
What happens due to this ?
What are the symptoms ?
What are the normal infections from ?
Name the bacteria.
Name the parasite.
Helper T Lymphocytes.
The number of helper T cells decreases (produced by the thymus gland ) they bind to antigen.
Because of infections we see bouts of fever , diarrhoea and weight loss.
Bacteria , fungi , viruses and parasites .
Mycobacterium.
Toxoplasma.
NACO stands for
National AIDS Control Organisation.
Preventive measures for AIDS by WHO , NACO and NGO s any 4
Educating people about safe sex with single partner.
Making blood from blood banks safe from HIV.
Ensuring use of only disposable needles and syringes in public and private hospitals and clinics.
Free distribution of condoms.
Controlling drug abuse.
Promoting regular checkup’s for AIDS in susceptible populations .
How can this disease be handled in the end ?
Can be tackled only by the society and the medical fraternity acting together , to prevent the spread of the disease.
