What does WaterAid do?
WaterAid is an international NGO (non-governmental organisation /charity) that focuses on the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest people.. WaterAid’s vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe domestic water and effective sanitation
How does lack of water affect women and children?
Women spend much of their time searching for water. Children also spend precious school hours looking for water at the expense of their education
Why is Mali affected by lack of water?
Mali’s environment is harsh and deteriorating. Rainfall levels are already low and falling further. The Sahara Desert stretches into Mali
Stats about Mali’s water?
In Mali, current national figures indicate that only 50% of the people have access to clean drinking water and only 4% of the population have access to adequate sanitation facilities (toilets).
Why is a lack of water bad?
Poor sanitation means bad health. Bacteria, viruses and parasites found in human waste are responsible for the transmission of cholera, typhoid and other infectious diseases that kill millions of people each year. The problem is huge in both urban and rural areas.
Where are WaterAid concentrating their work?
Wateraid is first targeting Slums in Mali’s capital, Bamako, it wants to show the government that projects in slums are easy to set up and sustainable.
How does WaterAid work in Mali?
Wateraid employs local people, who they are training up to maintain the system and raise money to keep it running.
Then invest in the community – THIS IS SUSTAINABLE
How have WaterAid helped Mali?
Health has now improved include reducing the deaths from diarrhoea – 65% improvement
Education is now improving, money is being invested into the infrastructure
What does GoatAid do?
Gives goat to family and villages- Tanzania and Malawi
Advantages of GoatAid?
Milk and babies (goats) can be sold for food and education.
Manure can be used as crop fertiliser.
Goats breed easily so it is sustainable.
Goat milk and meat is a good food source.
Brings village together as they look after the goats.
Disadvantages of GoatAid?
Transporting a goat to a new environment could be an issue.
Family has to provide food and shelter for the goat.
Need to be taught how to look after the goat properly.
Veterinary care is expensive and difficult to find.
Sustainability of GoatAid?
Goats reproduce and can be given to someone else.
Knowledge once gained can be passed on.
Benefits more than milk.
