Definition of Aid
Aid can be both international and foreign.
It is the voluntary transfer of resources from one country to another, given at least partly with the aim of benefitting the receiving country.
What is the 3 different types of Aid?
Non-government organization (NGO), Bilateral aid, Multilateral aid.
What is NGO?
NGO is a non-profit organization ran separately from government control.
It focuses on addressing social, political or environmental issues.
What is an example of NGO?
World Vision. It operates in over 100 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
What is Bilateral Aid?
Is a type of aid where assistance is given directly from the government of one country to a government of a different country.
What is an example of Bilateral Aid?
Friendship Bridge. The Friendship Bridge built between Thailand and Laos was built using Australian aid funding.
What is Multilateral Aid?
Multilateral involves multiple countries collecting resources together, which is then distributed by international organizations.
What is an example of Multilateral Aid?
United Nations. It operates globally, with its headquarters in New York City, US.
4 Advantages of International Aid.
- Long term development for LEDCs.
- Supports economic, social and environmental policies.
- Leading experts work in specific fields.
- Raises more awareness for less public issues.
4 Disadvantages of International Aid
- LEDCs have an obligation to spend aid on goods and services.
- For NGO, up to 30% of donations may go to the company rather than the LEDC.
- Directed to specific organizations, leaving others without funding/ benefits.
- Inappropriate technology might be needed.
