Q

Shiela: responsibility quotes (advanced grade 9 analysis)

A

“But these girls arent cheap labour - theyre people”

  • plosive of “cheap labour” creates harsh sounds –> signifying how Shiela has realised the harsh & barbaric exploitation permitted by capitalists on the working class.
  • connotations of “girls” - create a sense of innocence, this further exacerbates the dehumanising exploitation of the young, innocent and vulnerable.
  • “cheap” typically connotes something of monetary value –> interesting that although Shiela recognises immoralities of capitalism, these capitalist ideologies of viewing people in terms of money & status are still deeply ingrained into her. She is not yet able to break away from these ideologies as for so many yrs she has been ceaselessly indoctrinated by capitalism. This emphasises the danger of capitalism
