People encouraged to abandon bourgeois emotional attachments for the communal good lifestyle

A

Surrender all private property, private farming was abolished

No longer motivation to work unless you were inspired by communal gain

Loss of personal freedom

Teams worked longer without breaks

What were the effects of the great famine? why was it so bad?

A

30m deaths, highest estimate 60m

Famine serious in rural areas

Tibet- 25% of it’s 4m population wiped out

Some peasants ate tree bark and plants to survive, husbands sold wives and parents sold children for food

A

Mao trying to develop communes launch 2nd5YP and mobilise masses to work on Engineering projects

Was relying on farmers but they could only support themselves and their families

Few technical experts to give advice as Mao purged them

Cadres didn’t dare speak out

Industrialising China was more important, lives didn’t matter
