What is a Calf?
Birth to weaning
What is a Weaned/speaned Calf?
Calf not on milk
What is a heifer?
Female cow to first lactation (a cow that hasn’t given birth yet)
What is a Maiden Heifer?
A breeding heifer which has not been served or inseminated yet
What is a bulling heifer?
A heifer of breeding age (15+ months)
What is an In-calf heifer?
A heifer that is confirmed pregnant
What is a bullock/steer?
A castrated male (cattle)
What is a stirk?
A bull or cow from weaning to 1 year (to 2 years)
What is store cattle?
Young cattle being fed for growth prior to fattening and slaughter
What are fattening/finishing cattle?
Cattle being fattened for slaughter- usually beef breed or beef cross
What is a bull?
An entire male (cattle)
What is a beef cow/ suckler cow?
A beef or cross breed cow whose progeny is being reared for slaughter
What is a dairy cow?
A cow who is kept for milk production
What is a cull cow?
A cow that is sold out of the heard the end of productive life
What is a lamb?
sheep from birth to weaning
