Agricultural systems. Flashcards
Subsistence.
Land produces enough food to feed the family, pay taxes and a surplus which is sometimes sold. Main priority is to be self-sufficient and improvements are held back by lack of capital.
Commercial.
Maximises profits. Takes place on a large scale and is carried out by individuals and companies.
Extensive.
When amounts of capital and labour are small in relation to the amounts of land being farmed. Labour in limited but capital is higher.
Intensive.
Where the amounts of labour are high even if the amount of capital is low in relation to the area farmed. Labour input can be low but capital high allowing high levels of mechanisation and technological input.
Arable.
Is growing crops and can be on an intensive and extensive scale.
Pastoral.
Involves farming and usually takes place in less favourable areas to arable farming. This can be both intensive and extensive.
Mixed.
Is where farmers grow crops and rear animals on the same farm.
Human factors affecting farming.
Capital. Land tenure. Inheritance laws. Farm size. Technology. State influence.
Physical factors affecting farming.
