Agression Flashcards
What is the limbic system
A network of subcortical structures in the brain thought to be involved in regulating hormones in the brain
Two examples of subcortical structures
1) hypothalamus
2) amygdala
What does the limbic system consist of
The cingulate gyrus Septal area Hypothalamus Fornix Amygdala And parts of the hippocampus and thalamus
What does the amygdala do
This determines how both humans and non-human animals behave in response to environmental threats and challenges
What is the Orbitofrontal cortex
The OFC is thought to be involved in self-control, impulse regulation and inhibition of aggressive behavior
What is serotonin
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which is important in calming aggressive impulses
What effect does serotonin have on the brain
It slows down and dampens neural activity and makes you calm / tired
An example of a serotonin breakdown product
5-HIAA (a metabolite)
What is testosterone
A male sex hormone more commonly found in high levels in males.
What is the role of the limbic system
To process emotional responses
What is usually present in people with high levels of agression
MOAO gene
High levels of testosterone
What does the MOAO gene cause
This cause the breakdown of serotonin to be more difficult
