What is happening to the number of elderly people and comparitvely the number of young people, state why?
The number of older people is increasing because fewer people die in both childhood and middle age
The number of young people in relation to older people is decreasing due to the increasing number of elderly people
Define healthy life expectancy
The average number of years of full health
Define life expectancy
The average period that a person may expect to live
Is healthy life expectancy improving ?
Yes but not as much as overall life expectancy
What is the main cause of disability ?
CVD e.g. stroke, HTN, ischaemic heart disease etc
Define what ageism is
Ageism is an unacceptable behaviour that occurs as a result of the belief that older people are of less value than younger people
What is elder abuse and who is it usually carried out by ?
- It is abuse of older adults
- Usually from close relatives carrying out Financial, verbal, physical, sexual absue.
- Financial abuse is the most common
In the past historically what were families comprised of ?
Historically it used to be large extended families living close together with the youngest in the family looking after the older people
What is the typical dynamics of a family in the present day ?
Typically small, nuclear families with all members working so no one able to look after older relatives when they become unable to look after themselves
What is a nuclear family ?
A couple and their dependant children
What is the majority of care of the elderly provided by now instead of family members ?
Social servcies e.g. home help, residential or nusing homes
