OUTLINE AND EVALUATE DEINDIVIDUATION AS EXPLANATION
1) intro:
2) nature of DEINDIVIDUATION (festinger), zimbardo)
3) process
4) research on it: zimbardo
EVAL:
5) differences (cannavale)
6) evaluation: research Rehm
7) EVAL: cultural differences
8) application: mann baiting crowd
9) inconclusive support
1) intro
Based on crowd theory, which was idea that when in a crowd people get idea that they are anonymous and contagion spreads which wipes out norms
2) nature of DEINDIVIDUATION(festinger and zimbardo)
Festinger described it as when inner restraints are most a’s person isn’t seen
Zimbardo furthered: when ppl join crowds we get a cloak of anonymity removes personal consequences
3) process
Focus is on antisocial behaviour, crowds deindividuate you. When in a group, we loose so ial norms (zimbardo also said there are pro-social crowds too)
- crowds have conditions which remove awareness and fear of evaluation, therefore weaken sense of guilt
4) research (zimbardo)
He carried out study which led to idea that anonymity causes aggression.
Procedure: 4 female undergraduates had to give shocks to aid learning. Half the pps had hoods on and others wore normal clothes, they could all see each other.
Result: pps in the deindividuated condition were more likely to press a button they thought caused a shock
5) EVAL: research:
Rehms study backs it. Tested anonymity in sports. Observed 30 games of handball in 3 German skls and one team wore bright orange. The other wore their own kit. The bright orange were significantly more aggressive. I
6 EVAL: gender differences(cannavale)
Cannavale found make and female groups responded differently in deindividuated situations. The male ONLY group had higher aggression than female only. Might hint that biological aspects are the cause.
7) EVAL: cultural differences (Watson)
Tested warriors in 33 societies to see relationship between image and aggression. Found ones who wore paint were more aggressive.
8) application: MANN
Mann formed baiting crowd idea. Studied 21 suicides in news, found that in 10/21 there was a large crowd which was far and would bait them to jump
9) EVAL: inconclusive
There is inconclusive support for the theory of DEINDIVIDUATION. Meta analysis of 60 studies deemed there to be insufficient support
