Aggression Flashcards
Animals of the same species attack eachother
Intra-species aggression
What is signaling subordinance? Example? Benefits?
A positive feedback loop in which the animal can sometimes change their colors to indicate that they have consistently won fights.
Example: Atlantic Salmon changes color for dominant and subordinate
Benefit: Saving energy for future aggression
Hormone found in dominant individuals
Testosterone
Hormone found in subordinate individuals
Cortisol
What would happen if lobsters were injected with seratonin?
less confidence and less aggression
What would happen if lobsters were injected with prozac?
Spike in aggression would increase, more confidence
Bourgeois
the one who occupies the resource wins: fight is not worth it
Anti-Bourgeois
If there are many spaces available, the organism is likely to leave and the intruder wins
War of attribution model
aggressive displays, no fighting
What are the 3 basic assumptions for the war of attribution model?
- Can display for a period of time
- Display is costly
- no clear cue for the winner
why do females favor males who display the longest? Example?
-energetically handling
- display they are better at avoiding predators
Example: Dung Fly
Sequential Assesment
repeated bouts after which individuals repeat trials and it’s more likely to be accurate
Winner Loser Effect
Changing the probability of future wins, Loser effects are more common than winner effects
What are the hormones that take place in the winner/loser effect?
Testosterone, Cortisol, Androgen
Bystander effect
learning something about potential future opponents
