Religion serves four basic functions:
Discipline- moral rules and codes which create a community and understanding if an individuals place in society.
Authority- when people follow a God- they submit to a higher authority- observing authority in society.
Collective ceremonies- common values are reinforced.
Cohesion- reinforcing social sodality.
Weber- idea.
Sects and cults normally have a charismatic leader.
Sects in particular have very strict guidelines the followers have to abide by e.g. Jehovah witnesses don’t accept blood transfusions.
Holm and Bowker- ideas.
In all major world religions, women are subordinate.
Religious organisations that are women only e.g. Nuns were created.
Miller and Hoffman- ideas.
Men are less religious than women.
Men are more likely to be ‘irresponsible’, short sighted, risk takers.
Have been socialised this way.
Secularisation.
Some sociologists believe religion is dealing in importance in today’s society.
Bruce- ideas.
Attendance to traditional church is declining.
Modood- ideas.
Surveyed young people.
Found that 67% of pakistani’s and Bangladesh see religion as important.
Compared to 5% of British males.
Individuals brought up in a Muslim, Sikh and Hindu families for example important influence to norms and values.
How does the media socialise us?
