Education does not encourage working class success. Experience of working and middle class is different. Not as many vocational courses, academic important.
Troyna and Williams- ideas.
Describe the curriculum in British schools as ethnocentric because it gives priority to white culture and English language.
Willis- ideas.
Conducted 'learning to labour' study into working class lads in the Midlands. They resisted education because of the working class culture. No qualifications so suited to manual labour. Didn't break out of their class.
Bowles and Gintis- ideas.
Education system is a ‘myth making machine’ which brainwashes students into abidence and unquestioning attitude. Pupils taught to except their place in society and believe their achievements and failures are the making of themselves.
Mac an Ghail- ideas.
Identifies school subcultures e.g. Macho lads and gay students.
Rosenthal and Jacobsen- ideas.
Told teachers they had identified a number of ‘Spurters’ but actually had been picked at random.
A year later these students were doing better than their peers.
Observed that they had made had been linked to the way they were defined.
Teachers had expected more than them- resulted in self fulfilling prophecy.
How does education socialise us?
The formal curriculum- rules, lessons.
The hidden curriculum- peer group and teacher labelling.
