What are the four main types of cardiovascular disease?
Coronary Artery Disease
Cerebrovascular Disease
Peripheral Artery Disease
Aortic Atherosclerosis
Explain Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary artery disease is cause by a narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries. These are the arteries that supply the heart muscle with blood. CAD can lead to myocardial infarction, Arrhythmia’s and chronic heart failure
Explain Cerebrovascular disease
Cerebrovascular disease is a group of conditions that affect the blood flow to the brain. Conditions such as Stroke, brain aneurysm, brain haemorrhage and carotid artery disease can occur.
Explain Peripheral artery disease
A condition which results in reduced blood flow to the arms and legs. A typical symptom is called claudication and is when there is pain in the leg when exercising but is relieved by rest.
What is Aortic atherosclerosis
plaque build up within the aorta
What is Osteoarthritis
The most common form of arthritis and occurs when the cartilage in a joint begins to gradually break down. This results in pain , swelling and stiffness of the joint. It is a wear and tear related condition.
What is rheumatoid arthritis
This form of arthritis is a result of an autoimmune condition that results in the immune system attacking the synovial membrane that lines a joint. This results in inflammation and swelling of the joint.
What is osteoporosis
This is a disease that occurs when a persons bone density and mass decreases and results in their bones becoming weak and brittle. As a result of this condition, patients are far more likely to break bones if they have a fall.
What is Chronic kidney disease
This is a disease that effects how effectively the kidneys are able to perform their job. patients with CKD will experience gradual loss of kidney function. In some people, the disease will progress to end-stage kidney failure, they will then require dialysis or a transplant.
What is COPD
COPD is an umbrella term for a group of conditions that includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis and chronic asthma. This condition results in the patient experiencing shortness or breath, coughing (dry or productive) and wheezing
What is asthma
constriction of the bronchioles and excessive mucus production that makes it difficult for the patient to breathe.
