Age-Related Sensory System Changes Vocab Flashcards
Presbyopia
far sightedness
Cataracts
Opaque spots in vision and on the lens of the eye
Glaucoma
a disease in the eye caused by improper fluid drainage resulting in internal damage and progressive vision loss
Macula
the focal point of vision
Age-related macular degeneration
progressive and irreversible destruction of receptors from a combination of genetic predisposition, natural age-related changes in the eye, and lifestyle factors resulting in loss of central vision
Diabetic retinopathy
can involve fluid retention in the macula, detachment of the retina, hemorrhage, and aneurysms, and is the most common cause of blindness among younger and middle-aged people
Prebycusis
a normative age-related loss of the ability to hear high-pitched tones
Congestive heart failure
occurs when cardiac output and the ability of the heart to contract severely decline, making the heart enlarge, pressure in the veins increase, and the body swells
Angina pectoris
occurs when the oxygen supply to the heart muscle becomes insufficient, resulting in chest pain
Myocardial infarction (MI)
heart attack - occurs when blood supply to the heart is severely reduced or cut off
Atherosclerosis
age-related disease caused by the buildup of fat deposits on and the calcification of the arterial walls
Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
stroke - bloodflow to a portion of the brain is cut off
Hypertension
high blood pressure
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
a family of diseases that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema
Emphysema
Most serious form of COPD characterized by the destruction of the membranes around the air sacs in the lungs
(irreversable)
Autonomic nervous system
the nerves in the body outside the brain and spinal column
