God, Gold, and Glory
A European country that helped start the Age of Exploration by developing navigation tools and skills.
Portugal
A prince of Portugal who sent out fleets in 1520 to search Africa’s west coast, where they found gold, and named it the Gold Coast. (3 words)
Henry the Navigator
A Spanish sailor who believed the Earth’s circumference was shorter than others thought, and that he could sail west to Asia; he persuaded Queen Isabella to finance him, and went off; in October of 1492, he reached Cuba of the Americas, believing he had made it to India; after 4 voyages, he had discovered the Caribbeans, and Honduras, and called them the Indies.
Columbus
A Spanish explorer who persuaded the king to finance his journey to Asia by going west; he went off in September 1519, and in 1520 reached the Pacific Ocean by going down and around South America (through the Strait of Magellan); though he was killed by natives of the Philippines, his fleets circumnavigated the globe back to Spain.
Magellan
A treaty signed in 1494 by Spain and Portugal, which split the Western lands down a line of demarcation from north to south, giving Spain the all territory west of the line, and Portugal all land east of the line.
Treaty of Tordesillas
Portugese explorer who explored South America and declared it a new continent.
Amerigo Vespucci
The transfer of plants, animals, diseases, and materials between the Americas and Europe and Asia.
Columbin exchange
South American country that was “discovered” by Portuguese explorer Cabral, who claimed it for Portugal.
Brazil
A series of islands in Southeast Asia; where Magellan was killed while circumnavigating the globe.
Philippines
A series of voyages during the 1400s, 1500s, and early 1600s when European explorers explored the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Age of Exploration
What Columbus and the Europeans called the Americas, which they thought were the Indies.
The New World
A new kind of ship made by Portuguese and Spanish shipbuilders by the 1400s. It was small, fast, and easy to drive. It had a special bottom that could prevent it from being destroyed in shallow water. Used lateen sails, used by Muslims, so it could sail in any kind of wind.
Caravel
The son of King John I of Portugal. He was nicknamed “the Navigator.” He didn’t go on explorations but he directed and encouraged explorations. He sent many explorers on early expeditions to the west coast of Africa, hoping to obtain gold and Asian trade routes.
Prince Henry
He was the first European to sail around the southern tip of Africa in 1488.
