Age Flashcards
Life chances
Some members of society have much better opportunities to improve their quality of life and achieve things in life that most people would view as desirable.
Age
Age is socially constructed. In other words, ideas about age are not based on biology alone, rather age is defined through the culture a person lives in therefore there is a disparity of experience.
Work and Employment
MORI- Found that 38% of discrimination cases filed after 2006 cited age as the reason.
Income and Wealth
Scase & Scales- Due to the reduction of state pension benefits poorer pensioners may have to continue working past retirement age. There is great disparity of experience of old age. Those who have financial security will not “grow old” in the same way as those who must work until they can no longer.
Poverty
3.5 million children living in poverty in the UK. It has many effects on life chances: education, health, and the community they live in.
Health
Youth: Children’s Society- 20% of young people experience mental health problems, 70% are not treated fast enough.
Health
Elderly: NHS- 1 in 5 older people experience depression.
