Q

How does Achilles die?

A
  • Paris kills him with an arrow (most heroes die in ionic and dishonoured ways)
    • Paris is seen as an unheroic figure as he is more involved in the bedroom than the battlefield
    • Mortal archers are also considered cowardly as they fight from afar
  • The arrow hits his heel, his one weakness
    • Thetis dipped him in the River Styx as a baby to try and make him immortal, but his heel wasn’t exposed
  • Apollo observes, as he is on the side of the Trojans
    • Ajax and Athena protect Achilles’ body
    • Odysseus fights off the Trojans
