Imperialism
Competing with other nations to prove your country’s greatness.
Nationalism
The belief that Europeans and Americans had a duty to civilize other parts to the world and make them like them.
White Man’s Burden
The deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.
Genocide
1948-1994: Whites and blacks separated with whites in power, mistreating blacks, and making laws that did so.
Apartheid
Viewing ones own culture as superior to others, and applying your own’s culture’s values to judge people in other cultures.
Ethnocentrism
A special ceremony or ritual that marks a particular stage of life, such as reaching adulthood.
Rite of Passage
Has a high standard of living, and economies based on a combination of industry, service, and agriculture.
Developed Nation
Has a low standard of living, little industry, and an economy that mostly relies on farming.
