AFO Flashcards
Foot plate
- generic or custom molded geometry
- extends to MT heads or full length to tips of shoes
Stirrup
metal attachment riveted to the sold of the shoes
- split stitrups allow for shoe interchange
- solid stirrups are fixed permanently into the shoe and provide for max stability
hinged/articulating AFO
single axis of rotation, allows motion in sagittal plane while controlling motion in other planes
free motion
little or no resistance to PF or DF
- helps maintain alignment and M/L stability
DF assist
- dynamic DF assist, primarily for weak DF
- limited resistance to PF
- assist toe clearance during swing phase and help control PF on initial contact
- Ex: posterior lead spring or carbon fiber ADO
PF stop
- blocks PF motion, typically at 90 degrees
- allowed free DF for weak DF or tight PF
DF stop
blocks DF motion
- allows free PF motion
- indicated for people with weak PFs
static or solid ankle AFO
provides maximum stability and control of ankle, ankle positioning in a preferred alignment
- assist swing clearance and prepositioning
- leather lacer is example
ground reaction AFO
- controls forward progression of tibia, primarily for PF weakness
- anterior shell with WBing capabilities, shel transfers force to medial tibial flare, patellar tendon bar - like prosthetic socket
CROW Boot
immobilizes and protects the foot and ankle with rocker bottom and custom molded insert
- alternative to total contact casting in DM
- eliminates shear forces on plantar surface
