- prior to 2002 the taliban controlled 90% of the country despite not officially being in power
- US and allies has since overthrown them but rates of insurgence have increased
- end of 2014 saw the end of the NATO led combat mission although 10,000 troops remained to train Afghan military

UNAMA was established by security in council in 2001 which aimed to achieve sustainable peace. Aims inlcuded -
- promoting accountability
- achiever fill enjoyment of their HR for women, returning migrants and those displaced (75000 people)
- promote respect for national and international HR laws

- attempts have been made to remove limit of women in parliament
