AFD high rise op. characteristics
- 75ft. above lowest level
- high risk/ low frequency
- difficult/ tasking op.
- complete emergency evacuation is not practical
Basic operational plan
- Determine the fire floor.
- Verify the fire floor.
- Control building occupants/firefighters
- Control building systems (elevators/HVAC)
- Confine and Extinguish the fire
High rise emergency response categories
- Fire alarm activation
- Report of smoke and or fire
- Working fire/ sprinkler system activation by initial responding units
Elevator Phase I operations
elev. Recall to designated floor (lobby)
Off- Normal operation
On- Recall to lobby
Bypass- Override
Elevator Phase II operations (inside)
On- activates manual control (hold button down)
Hold- keeps car on floor you exit onto
Off- Returns to Phase I operations and returns car to Lobby floor
Elevators (operations)
Hazard- pinching crushing, electrical, falling
Construction- elevator car, hoist way, and machine room
Elevator cars- hydraulic (guide rail,oil supply,lift cylinder) electric traction (sheave and motor)
Types of elevators
single- one
multiple- 2 or more
blind- not accessible from all floors
Machine room locations
Hydraulic- rooms are found lowest level
Electric traction- on roof
Incidents Vs. emergency
incident- no life threat (elevator malfunctions)
emergency- 1. person is in panic and threatening others. 2. fire is endangering elevator 3. person is injured or ill
Hard reset
turning off breaker usually resets system (30 sec.)
