1
Q

Q

What is an emergence profile?

A

Defined as the contour of the tooth or dental restoration where it meets, or “emerges” from the gingiva.

Q

What is a smile line?

A

Linked to the amount of gingiva showing. Average, high or low.
High - too much gum
Low - Top lip covers too much teeth.

Q

State a way of which you can investigate a patient’s occlusal cant

A

Ruler at inter pupillary line, ruler at the teeth along incisal edges, judge how parallel they are.

Q

What is gingival zenith?

A

The zenith is defined as the most apical point of the gingival marginal scallop. It is never actually in the midline of the tooth, it is slightly to the distal.
It is important as it is very obvious to the eye - aesthetics. In orthodontics the zenith moves with the teeth.

Q

Incisor features - what is a lobe?

Q

Incisor features - what is a developmental groove?

A

The developmental grooves divide the lobes and run parallel to the long axis of the tooth.

Q

Incisor features - what is a transitional line angle?

A

The central and lateral incisors have a mesial and distal transitional line angle which are similar to marginal ridges in posterior teeth.
In between transitional line angles, the teeth tend to be flat and at the transitional line angles the tooth curves round and drops into the embrasures.

Q

When do you carry out shade selection?

A

At the beginning! Can be rapid shade change due to dehydration so never do it once tooth is dried.

Q

What is the composite button technique in regards to shade selection?

A

1.0mm blobs of various shades placed onto tooth and set but with no acid etching so it does not bond. Allow 1 minute to rehydrate and reassess shade of composite to be used.

16
Q

What is hue? - composites

A

Basic colour - A, B C or D on Vita shade guide.

17
Q

What is chroma? - composites

A

Intensity of the colour - (A1, A2, A3 A4)

18
Q

What is value? - composites

A

Brightness/lightness of the restoration (high, medium, low)

19
Q

Explain how you carry out shade selection - hue and chromatic effect

A

To ascertain the hue, take the shade tab to the cervical area of the tooth to be restored or the canine.
The cervical area of the canine has the highest density of dentine and will give a true hue for the tooth.
For the chromatic effect, take the shade of the cervical, middle and incisor third of the tooth.

20
Q

When selecting shade for teeth it is important to:

A

Take the shade of moist teeth.
Take the shade from the middle 1/3 of the tooth.
Shade taking is subjective - ask a dental nurse for opinion.
