Dinction/dinstinctive choice of words:
Abstract or concrete
formal or conversatonal
technical or common
literal or figurative
Non figurative imagery
is created using verbal detail.
Figurative imagery
is created using similes metaphors and symbols
Methaphor
A metaphor is a simile without the ‘like’ and ‘as’
symbol
A symbol is a sign. It’s something that represents something else.
Onomatopoeia / echoism
are word/s that sound like the non verbal words they are describing.
euphony
language that is smooth, pleasant and musical to the ear
cacophony
language that is harsh, discordant and unmusical
Alliteration
is the repetition of initial consonants in a sequence of neighbouring words
Assonance
identical vowel sounds in sequence of neighbouring words
Repetition
is very effective in emphasising the depth and feeling.
Anaphora
deliberate repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive grammatical units.
