Aeromedical Flashcards
Define spatial disorientation.
Individual’s inability to determine his or her position, attitude, and motion relative to the surface of the earth or significant objects.
Define sensory illusion
False perception of reality caused by the conflict of orientation information from one or more mechanisms of equilibrium. Major cause of spatial disorientation.
Define vertigo.
Spinning sensation caused by a peripheral vestibular abnormality in the middle ear.
Type I SD.
UNRECOGNIZED.
Most dangerous
What you see or think is uncorroborated by other senses. Height-depth perception illusion.
Type II SD.
RECOGNIZED
Perceive the problem but fail to recognize it as SD.
Ex: Perceived instrument failure leading to a graveyard spin.
Type III SD.
INCAPACITATING
Experience such an overwhelming sensation of movement that you cannot orient yourself by visual cues or aircraft instruments.
Four types of hypoxia.
“H3S”
Hypoxic - secondary to insufficient oxygen in the air.
Hypemic - Reduction in the oxygen carrying capacity. Ex. smoking, anemia, CO, hemorrhage.
Histotoxic - Secondary to interference with oxygen use by the body.
Stagnant - Results from INADEQUATE
CIRCULATION of blood, which for aviators is
common in G Forces. Other examples are; Heart
Failure, Arterial Spasms, Vessel Occlusions.
