Aerodynamics Flashcards
Four Forces of Flight
What are the four forces of flight?
- Lift
- Weight
- Thrust
- Drag
What is lift?
Upward force created by the wing shape and airflow, counteracting weight.
What is weight?
Downward force due to gravity
What is thrust?
Forward force produced by the propeller and engine, overcoming drag.
What is drag?
Air resistance opposing thrust.
What is Bernoulli’s Principle?
Faster airflow over the curved top of the wing reduces pressure, creating lift.
What is the angle of attack?
The angle between the wing’s chord line and the oncoming air. Increasing it increases lift up to a point before causing a stall.
When do stalls occur? How do you recover?
When the angle of attack exceeds the critical angle, causing a rapid loss of lift. Recovery involves lowering the nose and adding power.
