What are the legs of a circuit (in order from takeoff)?
- Crosswind
- Downwind
- Base
- Final
- Upwind
What is a standard circuit?
Flown 1000’ AAE and lefthand turns
How can you join the circuit at an ATF (aerodrome traffic frequency)
Mid-downwind or straight-in downwind (if no conflict exists)
How can you join the circuit at an MF (mandatory frequency)?
From any direction if no conflict exists
How can you join the circuit at a control zone with a tower?
Any direction as instructed by ATC
What is a clearance?
An authorization from ATC. Must be complied with once ACCEPTED
What is an instruction?
Directive from ATC that requires a ‘read back’. Must be complied with unless safety is compromised
What is RONLY?
Receiver Only
What is NORDO?
No Radio
What are the light signals on the ground?
Steady Green - Cleared for Takeoff
Flashing Green - Cleared for Taxi
Steady Red - Stop
Flashing Red - Taxi Clear of the Runway
Flashing White - Return to Starting Point at the Airport
Alternating Green/Red - Exercise Extreme Caution
What are the light signals in the air?
Steady Green - Cleared for Landing
Flashing Green - Return for Landing
Steady Red - Give Way, Continue Circling
Flashing Red - Airport Unsafe, Do Not Landing
Alternating Green/Red - Exercise Extreme Caution
How do RONLY or NORDO aircraft acknowledge on the ground?
Turning to face the control tower, deflect rudders or ailerons, or follow the clearance
How do RONLY or NORDO aircraft acknowledge in the air?
Rocking wings (day) or single flash of landing light (night)
