Aerobic training Flashcards
VO2 max
measured in ml/kg/min
untrained = 40-50 ml/kg/min
trained = 90 ml/kg/min
Physiological makeup - VO2max
stronger respiratory muscles, bigger heart, increase RBCs = higher VO2max
Age - VO2max
from 20 VO2max drops 1% each year, loss of elasticity of heart, blood vessels and lung tissue = lower VO2max
Gender - VO2max
females lower than males as females have smaller lung volumes, lower haemoglobin levels
Training - VO2max
aerobic training increases VO2max by 20% as causes long term adaptations to heart, lungs and blood
Direct Gas Analysis
+ direct measurement, accurate, reliable
- maximal to exhaustion, not suited for elderly or heart problems, need specialist equipment
Cooper 12 min run
+ good for large groups, test yourself, cheap
- only prediction, need motivation,not sport specific
Multi-stage fitness test
+ good for large groups, cheap, published table of results
- only prediction, motivation needed, not sport specific
Queens college step test
+ sub max test, cheap, hr easily monitored, published table of results
- only prediction, shorter people at disadvantage, not sport specific
